Kwara State Governor and Chairman Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has met with the Conference of Nigeria Speakers in furtherance of the ongoing discussion for expeditious passage of the bill on the state police.
AbdulRazaq made this known in a terse statement posted on his verified Facebook Page on Wednesday morning.
In the statement, the Governor indicated that the meeting took place at the NGF Secretariat, Abuja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently transmitted a bill on the state police to the National Assembly.
Wind Gate News recalls that the House of Representatives on Tuesday jettisoned its plan to amend the police act and opted for an executive bill from Tinubu, aimed at decentralizing police operations in the country arising from escalating security challenges.
If passed at the National Assembly, the legislative framework would have to secure the nod of majority of the state Houses of Assembly for concurrence.
AbdulRazaq, in his post, expressed the readiness of his colleague Governors to partner the state lawmakers for the passage of the bill.
He said, “Yesterday (Tuesday), I hosted the Conference of Nigeria Speakers at the NGF Secretariat in Abuja to discuss the state police initiative championed by the administration of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
“We had a very productive engagement. The meeting came amid the constitutional amendment process, which is expected to go through the State Assemblies.
“As this important national matter progresses, I look forward to continued collaboration with our Speakers and all relevant stakeholders in advancing reforms that serve the best interest of our nation.”
