JUST IN.. NEC suspends eight members in Ogun Council for dragging NUJ to Court

By Folayimika Akanbi
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has ordered the suspension of eight members in the Ogun State Council for instituting legal action against the union.
The suspension was ratified at the NEC meeting of the union held on Wednesday in Abuja.
Those who fell under the sledge hammer of the union include Wole Shokunbi, Folake Ade-Adeniji, Razak Ayinla, Modupe Salabiu, Joke Adeleye, Kunle Ibukunle, Seun Odunlami, and Sekinat Salam-Opebiyi.
In arriving at the suspension, the NEC noted that the suspended members dragged the union to court without exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms, in breach of Article 7 (5d) of the NUJ Constitution.
The NEC meeting, which the National President, Comrade Al-hassan Yahya Abdullahi presided over, also approved the conduct of a bye-election for the office of Secretary, Kano State Council, to ensure the progress of the council.
The decision followed the refusal of the incumbent Secretary to allow amicable resolution of the lingering crisis in the council.
The NUJ NEC, however, approved the reinstatement of the Delta State Council Secretary, Mr Victor Soroku, after adopting the report of the Zonal Secretary fact finding team, following a petition earlier.
