As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day today, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has advocated a renewed commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and inclusive development.
The union added that democracy, as a system of government through popular will, must be nurtured to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
NUJ National President, Comrade Al-hassan Yahya Abdullahi, in a statement issued on Thursday, challenged stakeholders to strengthen democratic institutions and protect citizens’ rights.
Decrying what he described as poor remuneration for Journalists in the country, Abdullahi called for a standardized salary structure for players in the media industry.
He added that it is time for journalism to be treated as a professional career in a manner that journalists would begin to enjoy appreciable welfare.
“Under democracy, there is a need for government to prioritize remuneration for Nigeria Journalists; it is key. Our remuneration is very poor.
“Let us work toward making sure that government will consider journalism as one of the professional bodies as well as to see way of making sure that we have a very good salary structure for practicing journalists in Nigeria,” the NUJ President said.
Abdullahi identified free, responsible, and professional media as a cornerstone of a thriving democracy.
He said, “The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) joins Nigerians in commemorating Democracy Day, a momentous occasion that reminds us of the sacrifices made in the journey toward democratic governance.
“As the voice of the Nigerian media community, the NUJ reaffirms its commitment to the principles of democracy, press freedom, accountability, justice, and good governance. A free, responsible, and professional media remains a cornerstone of any thriving democracy, serving as a bridge between the people and those in authority.
“While celebrating the progress achieved over the years, the NUJ urges all stakeholders to continue strengthening democratic institutions, protecting citizens’ rights, and promoting an environment where journalists can operate freely and safely in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
“The Union calls for renewed commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and inclusive development, as democracy must continue to deliver tangible benefits to all Nigerians.”
