JUST IN: Abba writes Kano Assembly for Garo’s confirmation as Deputy Governor

By Atinuke Alao
Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has nominated a 48 year-old Murtala Garo as Deputy Governor of the state.
To this end, Abba has written to the state House of Assembly, seeking the screening and confirmation of the nominee.
The Governor made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued via his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
Garo was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.
On March 27, 2026, Abdulssalam Gwarzo voluntarily resigned his position as Deputy Governor of the state after members of the state House of Assembly commenced processes for his impeachment due to his refusal to defect to the APC along with the Governor.
However, in his letter to the House for a replacement, Abba said the nomination was in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.
He stated that the nomination forms part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in the state.
The Governor noted that the decision to nominate Garo was sequel to wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state.
Abba said, “Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination.”
He identified the nominee as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointed positions.
The Governor said the 48-year-old politician had served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
Garo also served as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State and as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
