The Federal Polytechnic, Offa, on Thursday, matriculated a new set of students for its 2025/2026 academic session, admonishing them to steer clear of cultism and other forms of anti-social behaviour.
It urged the new students to be cognizant of the danger inherent in taking part in vices, which usually end in tragedy.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Kamoru Kadiri, made the call in his address at the matriculation ceremony held at the institution’s permanent site, Offa.
He also warned them against involvement in cybercrime and get-rich-quick schemes that have become pervasive.
Kadiri encouraged the new students to be focused and studious, saying that they must inculcate discipline, diligence and integrity as their guiding principles.
He reminded the students that the institution has a zero-tolerance policy toward indiscipline and misconduct and called on them to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the polytechnic.
“Dear matriculating students, you have come here for a purpose. I urge you to remain focused and make the most of your time in this institution. Your primary responsibility is to make discipline, diligence, and integrity as guiding principles. You have to study, learn, and develop sound character. Steer clear of social vices. You must particularly shun all forms of vices and cybercrime, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” and get-rich-quick schemes.
“These activities are destructive and have ruined many promising futures. Remember, true wealth comes through hard work, integrity, and the blessings of
God. The Polytechnic operates a zero-tolerance policy toward indiscipline and misconduct. You are therefore expected to abide strictly by the rules and regulations as outlined in the Students’ Handbook. Violations may attract severe penalties, including expulsion.
“You are also expected to adhere strictly to the institution’s dress code. Indecent dressing, such as wearing tattered jeans, sagging trousers, Marlian slippers, body tattoos, inappropriate piercings of nose and ears, and other forms of improper appearance, is prohibited. Always remember that the way you dress reflects who you are.
“Cultism, hooliganism, and all forms of anti-social behaviour are strictly forbidden. These vices are dangerous and often lead to tragic consequences. I strongly advise you to avoid them completely. Be friendly, respectful, and law-abiding, and relate harmoniously with fellow students and staff.
“In view of the current security situation in the country, I urge you to be security conscious at all times. Avoid late-night movements and always keep your friends or roommates informed of your whereabouts,” the Rector said.
He also urged the newly admitted students to avail themselves entrepreneurial skills and programmes offered in the institution to become self-reliant and employers of labour after their graduation.
