In what is promised to be a battle ahead, the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Saliu Mustapha, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This is contained in a statement titled “Notice of resignation as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Mustapha’s quitting the ruling party came amid unconfirmed report that he is on his way to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in preparation for the 2027 general election.
The unconfirmed report also said the leadership of the PDP may have resolved to offer the Kwara Central Senator its ticket as its flag-bearer for the poll.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday night, Mustapha said he decided to leave the APC after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The legislator assured that he remained steadfast in the service to the people of Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria at large.
He stated that his readiness to
principles, purpose and commitment to the people remain unchanged in spite of his resolve to change the political platform.
“Following careful considerations of the recent developments in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, I have formally resigned my membership of the party in the state
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly. It follows weeks of extensive consultations and engagements with relevant stakeholders, my supporters, constituents across Kwara Central Senatorial District, and well-meaning Kwarans.
“As a politician, I have always believed that politics must be about people, principles and purpose. Where the path of a political platform no longer sufficiently aligns with these convictions and the aspirations of the people one represents, the honourable thing to do is to chart a new course.
“To the leadership of the APC ably led by H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, I express my deepest gratitude for the relationships and experiences I have been afforded over the years,” Mustapha, who is the Turaki of Ilorin said.
In the event that he joined the PDP and offered the ticket to seek re-election for Kwara Central Senatorial seat, Mustapha would be slugging it out with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, who has emerged as the APC candidate for the senatorial district in the forthcoming general election.
