The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council has cautioned members of the political class against overheating the polity through divisive rhetoric or actions capable of undermining national stability.
The union stressed the need for issue-based politics and responsible leadership, especially as the country continues to consolidate its democratic trajectory.
This was contained in the NUJ’s statement issued in Ilorin on Sunday to commemorate Easter celebration.
The state NUJ Chairman, Ahmed ‘Lanre Abdullateef, and the Secretary, Mahmood Olayinka, signed the statement.
The union, while commending the efforts of security agencies, urged them to intensify measures to safeguard lives and property.
The NUJ also lent its support for community policing and improved collaboration with the public so as to stemming the tide of insecurity across the country.
In the statement, the union felicitated Christians, particularly media professionals on the celebration of Easter, urging renewed commitment to unity, tolerance, and ethical journalism in fostering peace and development.
The union called for unity, oneness, and mutual respect within the media space, stressing the indispensable role journalists play in shaping public opinion and promoting peaceful coexistence.
The council emphasized that at a time the nation faces socio-political and economic challenges, journalists must remain committed to truth, fairness, and responsible reporting, avoiding sensationalism that could inflame tensions.
It tasked Christians to imbibe and reflect on the core lessons of Easter, which include sacrifice, love, humility, and hope in their daily interactions and professional conduct.
The NUJ, however, prayed for a united Nigeria and called for sustained peaceful coexistence among citizens, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.
