Insecurity: Traditional council suspends Ogboni meeting in Kwara community

By Folayimika Akanbi
Following what it identified as security concerns, the Oloro-in-Council in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has placed an immediate ban on a planned Ogboni meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) in the ancient town.
It urged individuals planning to attend the gathering to have a rethink, warning that security operatives have been deployed to enforce the ban and will arrest anyone caught violating the order.
The Esa of Oro Kingdom, Chief Samuel Taiye Otunola, in a statement issued on behalf of the council on Monday, said the people of the kingdom also vehemently opposed the gathering of the traditional group.
The statement warned that the gathering, if allowed, could worsen the already fragile security situation in Kwara South and should not proceed under any guise.
The Oloro-in-Council disclosed that both the state government and the state Police Command objected to the proposed gathering at this time, given prevailing security challenges in the senatorial district.
The statement also noted that the Ogboni Worldwide body, under the umbrella of the Aborigine Traditional Association Inc., has formally disowned the planned meeting in a letter addressed to the Oloro of Oro Kingdom where the association clarified that it is not aware of the event and does not recognise the purported organiser.
The Oloro-in-Council reassured residents of Oro Kingdom of their safety, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining peace, law, and order across the community.
