There seems to be no respite for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Court of Appeal, on Monday, in Abuja upheld the judgement voiding the National Convention of the party held last year.
The latest verdict affirmed the earlier judgement of the Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, which barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the convention.
Wind Gate News recalls that the faction of PDP under the control of its Governors’ Forum defied the judgement of the court that stopped its planned convention and went ahead to conduct it in Ibadan in November 2025, producing Saminu Turaki as its National Chairman.
Another faction of the party, which enjoys the support of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dismissed the convention and urged the court to invalidate it.
However, in a unanimous judgment on Monday, a three-member panel of the appellate court resolved the four issues for determination against the PDP.
The court held that the PDP’s appeal was without merit and that the Federal High Court was right to have entered the October 31 judgment and granted all the reliefs sought by the plaintiffs.
The Court of Appeal faulted the PDP’s claim that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to have heard the case on the grounds that issues involved were solely internal affairs of the party.
The court also held that the plaintiffs had the locus standi to have instituted the suit to protect their democratic rights and that the PDP was not denied fair hearing as it claimed in its appeal
The court awarded N2million cost against the PDP for filing a frivolous appeal.
