‘Lanre Sagaya: A Torchbearer in Engineering Field @80

By Ahmed Kazeem Jatto
Today, the 12th of April, 2026, the Engineering Community in Nigeria, and a vast network of admirers across the globe stand still to honour a colossus of integrity and a titan of industry, Engr Yusuf Olanrewaju Sagaya. On this historic day, Engr Sagaya joins the prestigious club of Octogenarians. Beyond stock taking of the journey of the past eight decades of this colossus on earth, it is indeed a celebration of eighty years of purposeful living, architectural brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to the upliftment of humanity.
The story of Engr Sagaya is a profound narrative of how local roots can nourish global fruit. Born in 1946 to the illustrious Olosan family in Ilorin, his journey began in the humble, rhythmic halls of a traditional Quranic School. It was there, amidst the recitations of the Holy Quran, that the foundations of his character were laid: discipline, faith, and a deep sense of communal responsibility.
From the boarding rooms of Omu-Aran to the historic classrooms of Government Secondary School (GSS), Ilorin, his academic brilliance was evident. By the time he walked through the gates of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1967, he wasn’t just a student; he was a young man with a vision to rebuild a nation then embroiled in civil strife. Graduating in 1970, he stepped directly into the field, repairing the war-damaged bridges between Benin and Ore; a symbolic start to a career dedicated to mending and building the nation’s infrastructure.
Perhaps the most defining moment of Engr Sagaya’s career was his decision to return to Nigeria after his Master’s degree in Canada and work with Maclaren International. In an era where many sought the comfort of the diaspora, he chose to manifest his patriotism through entrepreneurship.
When he founded YOLAS Consultants, the decision to headquarter the firm in Ilorin was both radical and profoundly intentional. At a time the corporate world revolved almost exclusively around Lagos, Engr Sagaya insisted that the world must come to Ilorin. For over 40 years, he has proven that excellence knows no geography. YOLAS has not only survived but thrived, becoming a lighthouse for professional engineering standards and a hub for training the next generation of Nigerian engineers.
To the people of Kwara State, Engr Sagaya is more than a Civil Engineer; he is the Zanna of Ilorin Emirate, a title he held at the behest of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, in recognition of his selfless service. His impact is visible in every corner of the community. His leadership as Chairman of the Kwara State Town Planning and Development Authority helped shape the physical growth of the state. As Chairman of the Ilorin Eid Praying Ground Remodeling Committee, he has applied his professional expertise to the service of God and the Muslim Ummah. Through the founding of Aderoju International School and his current role as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ojaja University, he continues to invest in the greatest resource of all—human capital.
In an age of loud proclamations, Engr Sagaya is a rare breed of quiet leadership. Despite being highly popular and influential, he has remained steadfastly apolitical, choosing to influence policy and progress through mentorship and counseling rather than partisan politics. His firm has served as a finishing school for countless Engineers. He didn’t just give them jobs; he gave them a blueprint for professional conduct. Today, many of his protégés sit at the helm of their own successful firms, a testament to his legacy of empowerment. His autobiography, “Chronicle of Monuments,” stands as a vital roadmap for any young Nigerian aspiring to bridge the gap between humble beginnings and national honour.
The national honours of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) are badges of a life lived in service to the collective good. Yet, beyond the titles and the fellowships (FNSE, FAEng), Engr Sagaya’s greatest joy remains his family. Alongside his wife, he has raised children who carry forward his torch of excellence in their respective fields.
Baba Sagaya, as you look back on eighty years of monuments; both the bridges made of steel and the bridges built between hearts, may you feel the immense weight of a grateful community’s love. May the Almighty Allah continue to grant you robust health, clarity of mind, and the serenity to enjoy the fruits of your labour. May you continue to be a source of wisdom for the youth and a beacon of hope for the nation.
Happy 80th Birthday to a Master Builder, a Patriot, and a True Son of Ilorin!
