NSA: Presidency wants El-Rufai probed over wiretapping claim

By Atinuke Alao
The Presidency has asked security agencies to launch a probe into Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State’s confession of tapping the telephone conversation of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the call in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter).
Wind Gate News reports that El-Rufai, featuring on Arise News Television Programme on Friday, admitted to listening to the conversation of Ribadu, via wiretapping while giving a directive for his arrest upon returning from his journey in Cairo, Egypt.
The former Kaduna Governor claimed to have traveled to Cairo for his annual vacation.
However, Onanuga, in the post on X, described El-Rufai’s disclosure as a “confession” and questioned whether the ex-Governor and his unnamed “collaborators” possess wiretapping facilities.
He asked, “El-Rufai confesses to wiretapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV. Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wire-tapping facilities?”
The former Governor and the Presidency have been at daggers-drawn over issues of governance in the last two years.
El-Rufai, formerly of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his inability to sail through security check after Tinubu nominated him as Minister.
He subsequently turned one of the ardent critics of the present administration.
He had barely appeared before the Senate for screening as a ministerial nominee from Kaduna State when it became apparent that he could not sail security hurdles.
The Presidency thereafter kept mum about the outcome of the Senate resolution.
