No fewer than 607 graduating engineering students for 2025/2026 academic session of the University of Ilorin have been officially inducted into the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE).
This followed their induction and COREN oath-taking ceremony, which the Ilorin branch of the society conducted on the graduating students preparatory to their convocation event at the institution.
The graduating engineering students cut across Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Food Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, all of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University.
Speaking at the ceremony themed “Engineering Excellence, Professional Integrity and Service to Humanity,” the Chairman, Ilorin branch of NSE, Engr Kazeem Ahmed Jatto, urged the inductees to make professional integrity their ultimate currency and steer clear of shortcuts in their undertakings in the engineering profession.
Jatto told them that excellence requires them to prioritize critical thinking and world class standards in design and execution.
Speaking on his journey into the profession, the NSE recalled that he as the Vice President of the National Association of Mechanical Engineering Students (NAMES) at the University of Ilorin went alongside the NAMES President, Joseph Omale, to meet with the then Ilorin branch chairman of the society to advocate the rejigging and elevation of the NSE Graduate Membership Induction Ceremony into a rite of passage worthy of the engineering calling.
While admonishing the inductees to avoid compromise in the profession, Jatto stressed the need for them to ensure that their signature and seal carry unblemished honour.
“To our dear Inductees and Oath-Takers: Look around you. You are stepping into a profession that literally holds the infrastructure, safety, and economic heartbeat of our nation on its shoulders.
The theme for today—“Engineering Excellence, Professional Integrity, and Service to Humanity”—is not just a catchy banner; it is your new operational code.
Excellence demands that you settle for nothing less than world-class standards in design, execution, and critical thinking.
“Professional Integrity is your ultimate currency. Never compromise safety for shortcuts. Let your signature and seal carry unblemished honour.
Service to Humanity reminds us that every bridge we design, every machine we maintain, every code we write, and every watt of energy we manage must ultimately make life better, safer, and more sustainable for mankind.
“Remember where you are starting from. This University nurtured me, and it has nurtured you. Wear your Graduate Membership and COREN registration like armour. Be active in the Branch, find mentors, challenge the status quo constructively, and uphold the ethics of the noble engineering profession,” Jatto said.
