The Sacred Convergence of Ramadan and Lent: Senator Mustapha’s Message of Love and Distribution of Food Items

By Abdullateef Ishowo

As we stepped into this sacred season of fasting and reflection, the people of Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole were presented with a profound and rare spiritual convergence. In 2026, the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims and the season of Lent for Christians commenced coterminously on Wednesday, February 18 –marking the inception of the 40-day Lenten period leading to Easter, and the sighting of the crescent moon ushering in Ramadan 1447 AH. This alignment, one of the rarest in recent history, offers a unique moment for interfaith solidarity in a nation-state where Muslims and Christians together constitute the vast majority of the population.

Against this backdrop, Senator Saliu Mustapha extends his heartfelt greetings to both Muslims and Christians in his constituency and across Nigeria. “To our Muslim brothers and sisters: Ramadan Mubarak. May this month of fasting, prayer, charity, and Quran recitation bring you closer to Allah and fill your hearts with peace. He prayed. And “to our Christian brothers and sisters: I wish you a blessed Lent. May this time of repentance, self-denial, prayer, and almsgiving draw you nearer to Christ and renew your faith”, the People’s Senator said.

Without an iota of doubt, Senator Saliu Mustapha relentlessly exudes an unparalleled leadership quality clothed in the garment of love, tolerance, compassion and unity. In the sacred rhythms of faith that grace Nigeria’s diverse spiritual landscape, he stands as a beacon of inclusive compassion. As the holy month of Ramadan unfolds its dawn marked by disciplined fasting, reflection and communal solidarity, the Senator representing Kwara Central has once again honored tradition by distributing 10 truckloads of essential food items: rice, beans, semovita, millet, and other staples to Muslim faithful and vulnerable residents across his constituency.

This annual gesture, sustained for over two decades, eases the burdens of many during iftar and suhoor, embodying the spirit of zakat and collective upliftment in a time of spiritual renewal.

Be that as it may, his ceaseless act of generosity and magnanimity knows no sectarian bounds. When the festive lights of Christmas and New Year approach, Senator Mustapha extends the same hand of solidarity to Christian communities. Festive hampers filled with assorted food items and chickens of varying sizes reach thousands, ensuring that families celebrate with dignity and felicity. In years past, such distributions have touched over 5,000 Christian beneficiaries, a quiet but powerful affirmation that care transcends creed.

In an era when economic hardship tests the nation’s unity, Senator Mustapha’s actions speak louder than rhetoric. By supporting Muslims through the rigors of fasting and Christians during their holiest celebrations, he weaves threads of empathy across religious lines—reminding all that true leadership builds bridges, feeds bodies, nourishes souls, and fosters the harmony that Nigeria so painstakingly needs.

His exemplar is a gentle yet profound lesson: compassion is not divided by faith; it is multiplied when shared. In Kwara Central and beyond, Senator Saliu Mustapha indelibly proves that the most imperishable palliatives are those delivered with equity, empathy and enduring goodwill. May such gestures perdure to inspire unity in this sacred season and always.

Kwara State, often celebrated as the “State of Harmony,” stands as a microcosm of Nigeria’s rich religious diversity. With a significant Muslim majority in areas like Ilorin and a substantial Christian population, particularly in other parts of the state, Kwara has long exemplified peaceful coexistence in-between faiths. This shared heritage reminds us that our common values—compassion, justice, humility, and devotion to God—far outweigh our differences.

Senator Saliu further draws insights into the significance of this season, calling for spiritual renewal, self-discipline and inner reflection. Fasting in both traditions is not merely about abstaining from food and drink but about purifying the soul, empathizing with the less privileged, and eschewing malefaction. Ramadan places emphasis on sawm (fasting), salah (prayer), zakat (charity), and increased worship, while Lent focuses on prayer, fasting, and giving to those in need. Both invite believers to examine their lives, seek forgiveness, and grow in virtue.

In the midst of these personal spiritual journeys, the People’s Senator urges all the faithful—Muslims and Christians alike—to pray earnestly for peace, unity, and security in Kwara State and across our beloved nation. Nigeria has faced significant challenges, including recent tragic terrorist attacks in parts of Kwara that claimed scores of lives and displaced communities, drawing international commination from bodies like the UN Security Council. As-a-matter-of-fact, these acts of violence, brutality and savagery underscore the urgent need for collective vigilance, community policing, and strengthened inter-state security collaboration to protect all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

The People’s Senator impels us to repudiate bifurcation and espouse the spirit of forbearance that our religions teach. The Quran reminds us: “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13). In the same vein, the Bible calls us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) and to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).

May this overlapping season inspire greater love, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians. Let it inure the bonds that unite us beyond religious or ethnic disparities, fostering mutual respect and shared humanity. In our homes, communities, markets and places of worship, let acts of kindness, altruism and understanding prevail.
