Tinubu: Nigeria back from brink

By Folayimika Akanbi
Following the reform his administration has undertaken, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Nigeria is back from the brink.
He explained that the country was heading for bankruptcy as of the time he proclaimed removal of subsidy on fuel, also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Tinubu stated this on Friday during a Ramadan Iftar with leaders in the nation’s media industry held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
It would be recalled that the President had embarked on a series of reforms since his inauguration on May 29, 2023 including withdrawal of subsidy on petrol, floating of currency and reformation of tax law.
Tinubu, while speaking at the event, said,  “At the time we had to confront the subsidy, Nigeria was tilting on the edge of bankruptcy.
“But having asked for the job and getting it, I cannot look back other than to make corrections as I move along and save the nation. Today, I can stand proudly before you that we are back from that brink,” he said.
Tinubu noted that tough economic reforms his administration took, had helped pull the country back from the edge of financial collapse.
He defended the controversial removal of fuel subsidy and other economic policy shifts, describing them as necessary decisions to stabilise the nation’s finances and avert economic disaster.
