The ambition of the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, to become the next Governor of Kwara State in 2027 has received a boost with the National Coordinator, Ilorin Emirate Political Advisory Council (IEPAC) Dr Yakub Yahaya Oloriegbe, throwing his weight behind him as his preferred flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also adopted Mustapha as the favoured candidate of the group.
Oloriegbe, who spoke to Journalists in Ilorin alongside the Secretary of the Council, Lt. Col Abubakar Edun (Rtd), announced the decision of the group to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his re-election bid.
He said this followed a careful deliberation and assessment of aspirants vying for key political offices.
Oloriegbe explained that IEPAC, an influential body of elders and stakeholders in Kwara Central Senatorial District, had resolved to support candidates and political platforms that would accord the district its “rightful place” in the political structure of the state.
Advancing reason for backing the President, the Council National Coordinator cited his administration’s performance over the past three years, particularly the support extended to Kwara Central.
“We unanimously endorse the aspirations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office. He should be given another four years to consolidate on his achievements”, he said.
For the governorship race, Oloriegbe threw his weight behind Senator Mustapha, describing him as a candidate with “wide acceptability, maturity, experience and exposure.”
He added that the senator has the capacity not only to win the election but also to govern the state “justly, fairly and competently.”
The National Coordinator of the council, however, stressed that its endorsement should not be interpreted as an attempt to sideline other aspirants.
He urged political actors across the state, especially major parties, to align with its position in the interest of unity, stability and progress.
The council National Coordinator further stated that it would continue to monitor political developments and could endorse other aspirants it deems capable of sustaining the achievements of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
